an organization beyond rote subscription to an SMS. a truly safe operation is not defined simply by the presence of a safety management system (SMS). While an SMS is a good start, more is needed, much more. The International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO’s) decision to require aviation organizations to adopt SMSs has clearly focused attention on the concept of an SMS. However, a decision was made at Bristow Group to expand the effort and set an ambitious goal. The letters in the abbreviation “SMS” neatly explain the why, what and how of the concept:
